Volocopter is launching a European sandbox program in 2026 to conduct flight trials of the VoloCity and VoloXPro electric aircraft under near-commercial operating conditions. The program includes a series of trials designed to simulate real-world operations to evaluate operational readiness and support type certification for both aircraft.
The sandbox will conduct point-to-point missions replicating flight procedures, ground operations, passenger experience for VoloCity, and operational use cases for VoloXPro in urban and regional mobility applications.
Volocopter’s partner ADAC Luftrettung will collaborate on select missions to explore potential applications of electric vertical takeoff and landing technology for emergency medical services and provide a basis for upcoming pilot trials planned to begin in selected regions.
“This sandbox is the final stretch toward making electric air taxis and ultralight aircraft a reality in Europe,” said David Bausek, CTO at Volocopter. “Testing VoloCity and VoloXPro in real-world environments with trusted partners like ADAC Luftrettung ensures we’re ready for commercial launch.”
“eVTOL Technology, especially Volocopter’s products, could transform emergency response and regional coverage by enabling faster, quieter, and more sustainable missions,” said Frédéric Bruder, CEO at ADAC Luftrettung. “Participating in Volocopter’s sandbox program allows us to explore these possibilities firsthand.”
Insights from the sandbox program are intended to inform future operations and the planned deployment of VoloCity and VoloXPro services across European markets.
