Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Bundeswehr to modernise its Army Combat Training Centre (Gefechtsübungszentrum Heer, GÜZ) in Saxony-Anhalt. The contract, booked in October 2025 and valued at approximately €61 million gross, aims to integrate the ‘Digitalisation of Land-based Operations’ (D-LBO) project into the central training facility. Initial services will begin in 2025, with full integration scheduled for early 2028.
The modernisation includes integrating a new digital radio system into the training centre, displaying all battle management system data in the command and control centre, and upgrading existing radio infrastructure. A broadband 5G network will be established, and Rheinmetall subsidiary Blackned’s Tactical Core software will be integrated into the communications systems.
The project is expected to enhance the Bundeswehr’s and NATO allies’ training and leadership capabilities, supporting multinational interoperability. Digital command processes from the ‘Sitaware Frontline’ and ‘HQ’ systems will now be included in the central training software, enabling more comprehensive exercise evaluations.
This contract follows Rheinmetall’s recent digitalisation projects, including vehicle and platform IT integration under D-LBO, the Tactical Wide Area Network for Land Based Operations, and soldier systems for digital infantry forces. The work will prepare Germany’s Army Combat Training Centre for D-LBO operations.
