A new mixed reality simulator is reshaping how Navy pilots prepare for flight. The T-45 Mixed Reality Trainer, now in use at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, was pioneered by Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey Dick, who recently received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his role in bringing the training tool to life.
The simulator blends real and virtual elements to allow student aviators to physically interact with cockpit controls while immersed in digital flight scenarios. Designed to enhance preparation for tactical strike aviation, the system aims to improve training efficiency and reduce time in more costly live-flight platforms.
Lt. Cmdr. Dick played a critical role in initiating the project through ONR Global’s TechSolutions program, which enables service members to submit ideas for rapid technological solutions. He coordinated with stakeholders across naval aviation training commands and helped guide development proposals to meet specific training needs.
Initial deliveries of the trainer began in mid-2024, with additional units being procured for NAS Meridian and NAS Kingsville. The simulator was also showcased at Tailhook 2024, where nearly 200 aviators tested its immersive capabilities.
The T-45 Mixed Reality Trainer is now a key part of the Navy’s strategy to close capability gaps in pilot training and improve mission readiness through advanced simulation.
