The European Commission invested €5 million to launch Phortify, a new network linking Europe’s universities, laboratories, and industry partners to strengthen digital skills and photonics expertise.
The initiative offers a harmonized curriculum across seven Master’s programs and modular courses co-designed with companies, giving students and professionals hands-on experience and recognized credentials. Phortify also provides lifelong-learning modules, remote labs, XR-enabled training, internships, and industry challenges, supporting flexible upskilling without lengthy career breaks.
Coordinated by Vrije Universiteit Brussel alongside 12 European partners, the network covers the full photonics value chain, from design and fabrication to deployment. The project prioritizes diversity, offering scholarships, mentoring, and mobility grants. By connecting academia and industry, Phortify aims to build a continent-wide talent pipeline, strengthening innovation and aligning with the EU’s Digital Europe goals.
