BMW of North America is deploying Quest 3 mixed reality technology to train technicians on electric vehicle battery maintenance. EV batteries are complex systems of cells, wiring, and fasteners, making physical training costly and prone to damage. To address this, BMW developed the Impossible Battery app, a virtual representation of its fifth-generation EV battery that allows technicians to explore the assembly and practice procedures using 14 different tools.

The app uses Touch controllers to guide tool placement, focusing on understanding the battery system rather than replicating exact physical interactions. Mixed reality allows trainees to view the physical room while interacting with virtual components, enhancing engagement and instructor-led guidance. Gamification features track repair times and costs, with plans for global leaderboards across training centers. BMW is also exploring the app for visualization, offering X-ray views of electrical and coolant flows within the battery system.
