South Carolina State University is opening a new virtual reality training lab designed to improve safety for commercial truck drivers across the state. The College of Engineering is launching the initiative with support from a federal High Priority–Commercial Motor Vehicle grant, allowing both students and licensed drivers to practice complex roadway scenarios in a controlled classroom environment. The VR system recreates traffic flow, blind spots, intersections, and pedestrian activity, giving participants the opportunity to build confidence before operating a full-size truck on public roads.

Instructors highlight the headset’s eye-tracking capabilities as a significant feature, offering insight into driver attention and situational awareness. University leaders and state safety officials support the program, which is expected to serve both emerging and experienced drivers with the goal of reducing crashes statewide.
