Rwanda is integrating virtual reality (VR) simulations into its ophthalmology training, marking a major step in medical education. As part of a two-week initiative led by Orbis International and the Ministry of Health, the Flying Eye Hospital arrived in Kigali to train residents and specialists in eye surgery.
The program features realistic VR simulators replicating the human eye in 3D, allowing trainees to perform surgical procedures virtually. The technology replaces previous methods that relied on animal tissue and accelerates skill acquisition.
Training is being conducted at multiple sites, including RIIO, Kibagabaga Hospital, and onboard the Flying Eye Hospital itself, which houses simulation labs and operating rooms.
This initiative is part of Rwanda’s broader strategy to expand eye care access and develop local training capacity. With international support and growing infrastructure, the country aims to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
