Researchers from the University of South Florida showcased their Delivering Innovative Vocational Education through Virtual Reality Technology (DIVE-VRT) project at the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals conference in Orlando on September 20.
The initiative combines virtual reality and artificial intelligence with USF’s LAUNCH program to train individuals with lifelong or acquired disabilities in skilled trades. The first cohort, which began in August, includes 16 students training in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Their program blends virtual simulations, hands-on learning, apprenticeships, and personalized coaching to support career readiness.
Currently based in Tampa Bay, DIVE-VRT plans to expand nationwide through a web-based replication model offering AI-driven support. The project is designed to increase access to vocational training and prepare participants for jobs in high-demand industries.
