Harlan County Sheriff’s Office deputies have begun virtual reality training using the Wrap Reality System to enhance communication, tactical decision-making, and de-escalation skills. The program, provided at no cost by the Kentucky Association of Counties, places officers in realistic scenarios where they can safely practice responses to mental health crises, domestic disputes, active shooter situations, and routine traffic stops.
Officers interact with virtual suspects using simulated firearms and tasers while headsets create immersive, life-like environments. The system allows trainers to control scenario variables, including suspect reactions and dialogue, helping deputies improve critical thinking and rapid decision-making in high-pressure situations.
The program aims to increase officer confidence, reduce errors, and ensure safe, effective field operations.
