A virtual reality training programme in Bridgend is transforming skills development for social care staff and improving patient outcomes. Rolled out in March 2025, the initiative was designed by Goggleminds to provide immersive, hands-on learning for managing dysphagia, a swallowing disorder affecting up to three-quarters of nursing home residents.

The programme allows staff to practice in realistic virtual scenarios that simulate swallow assessments and patient interactions. This approach aimes to mprove confidence, safety, and care delivery while reducing risks associated with missed medication, malnutrition, or hospitalisation.

Delivered by practitioners from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, the training has received positive feedback for combining theoretical and practical learning. Staff reported that the VR experience helped translate classroom learning into real-life applications, strengthening engagement and clinical practice.
