FundamentalVR, a Virtual Reality (VR) training and data analysis technology platform, entered a three-year strategic alliance and joint development agreement with Mayo Clinic, in which the companies will jointly develop surgical VR simulation and education products. Mayo currently uses the Fundamental Surgery platform at its simulation centers in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.

FundamentalVR will leverage the expertise of Mayo Clinic’s surgeons and clinical practitioners and 3D modelling, data scientists and simulation specialists to create new simulation content, assessment criteria and validation for Fundamental Surgery, its Haptic and VR medical simulation platform. FundamentalVR will also benefit from access to clinical research and validation opportunities.

The two parties will collaborate on a range of simulations with an initial focus on General Surgery, and will then move into growth areas including robotic and patient-specific simulation derived from DiCom (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) data and 3D modelling.

“This collaboration with the Mayo Clinic will dramatically accelerate our progress and ensures that the FundamentalVR team has access to the very best surgical knowledge,” said Richard Vincent, CEO at FundamentalVR. “Mayo Clinic and FundamentalVR are both ultimately focused on improving patient outcomes and with this in mind we share the belief that the comparative data insight and measurement available through our platform will have a profoundly positive impact on the wellbeing of people around the world.”
