The Aviation Workforce Development Program, established by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 and reauthorized in 2024, received some traction this week. The FAA directed that $26 million dollars be invested towards the aviation workforce. Eligibility is extended to schools, aviation organizations, non-profits, air carriers, labor groups, and government entities.

The investment aims to develop aviation professionals, covering pilots, mechanics, technicians, and drone operators. The funding was announced by US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. Investments will go toward aviation training programs, apprenticeships and internships, student outreach and recruitment, and simulator-based pilot training.

"More Americans are taking to the skies and demand for skilled aviation workers continues to grow," said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. "These new funding opportunities support education and training programs that help build a strong pipeline of talent and invest in the future of America's aviation workforce."

At a presentation during the ab initio track at WATS 2026, the presenter, Rebecca Lutte of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, asked the audience for their input on what they felt was the greatest barrier to entry in aviation. In an instant, an attendee raised her hand and shouted, “Funding!”

Halldale’s Paul Preidecker commented that "this effort will help secure a path for workforce sustainability across many disciplines."
