India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has proposed a significant change to pilot training eligibility rules. Currently, aspiring commercial pilots in India must have completed high school with physics and mathematics. Under the new proposal, students from arts and commerce backgrounds would also be eligible to enroll in Commercial Pilot License (CPL) programs.

The move aims to widen access to aviation careers and address a growing demand for pilots in India’s expanding airline industry. However, the proposal has sparked debate about maintaining training standards and ensuring student readiness for the technical demands of pilot training.

If approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, flight training schools would need to adapt their programs to include preparatory instruction in essential science subjects. The change has not yet been finalized and remains under review.
