Joby Aviation, Inc. is expanding its site in Marina, California. The expansion will double the aircraft production capacity at that location, which now spans approximately 435,500 square feet. The site is intended to support the company’s scale-up of commercial operations. Joby also added a new aircraft to its flight test fleet.
“Reimagining urban mobility takes speed, scale, and precision manufacturing. Our expanded manufacturing footprint in both California and Ohio is preparing us to do just that,” said Eric Allison, Chief Product Officer. “We celebrated the opening of the new facility with the flight of our sixth aircraft, which earned airworthiness certification within a week of completion.”
The Marina facility is expected to produce up to 24 aircraft annually and will support activities including FAA production certification, ground and flight testing, pilot training simulators, and maintenance. Joby’s broader manufacturing network includes its headquarters in Santa Cruz, California; a facility in San Carlos for powertrain and electronics; and a renovated site in Dayton, Ohio. The Dayton site will manufacture and test aircraft components for the company’s Pilot Production Line, with equipment installation underway. Production there is planned to ramp up to 500 aircraft per year.
In 2023, Joby received a $9.8 million grant from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and benefited from a California State Treasurer’s Office program that helped reduce equipment costs by $10 million.
