Johns Hopkins All Children’s Research Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida is expanding its medical simulation center to a new 13,000-square-foot space in its Research and Innovation Building that will open in September.
The research and education building will be a center for pediatric education, training and research. Construction began in 2016 and will house research and academic offices for four Johns Hopkins' offices, including the Heart Institute; the Cancer and Blood Disorders Institute; the Institute for Brain Protection Sciences and the Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Institute.
The simulation center will have its own operating 3D printer on-site that staff can use to build organs or tumors to aid in training. They will be able to use 3D-printed organs multiple times to practice difficult medical procedures in preparation for surgery on a patient.
The simulation center will focus on pediatric medical simulation. It currently has two child-like manikins that bleed and turn blue when correct medical measures aren’t taken and can run on medical machines used for humans.
