Firefighter training carries significant risks, with 11 of 62 firefighter fatalities in 2024 linked to training incidents, including heart attacks and heat exhaustion. Researchers at George Mason University are investigating how augmented reality (AR) combined with artificial intelligence (AI) can reduce these dangers.

Their AR-AI system allows firefighters to practice life-saving skills in simulated environments without exposure to real-world hazards. This technology aims to lower injury and fatality rates during training by providing immersive, safe, and effective practice scenarios.

Associate professors Craig Yu and Joel Martin lead the research to create safer firefighter training methods while maintaining the rigor necessary for effective emergency response preparation.
