ESA’s European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) has begun simulations to prepare for the launch and early-orbit operations of Sentinel-1D, the fourth satellite in the Sentinel-1 series. The mission will replace Sentinel-1A, which has exceeded its planned lifespan, and join Sentinel-1C in orbit.
The control team, supported by over a hundred specialists from ESA and industry, is conducting eight simulation sessions, reduced from the usual fifteen, to rehearse mission procedures and contingency plans. Training uses advanced software to replicate satellite and ground systems, covering scenarios from minor anomalies to launch delays that could coincide with Sentinel-6B’s campaign.
Sentinel-1D will launch on an Ariane 6 rocket from Kourou, marking the first ESA-operated satellite on this launcher. The campaign reflects ESOC’s experience with previous Sentinel missions while addressing the unique aspects of this launch.
