West Midlands Police has introduced virtual reality training to help new recruits understand male violence against women. In partnership with training provider Calico, the force is delivering immersive sessions to 700 officers by April 2026. The program places officers in the perspective of a woman navigating Birmingham after dark, encountering scenarios involving taxis, buses, and parks.

Participants hear real voices and stories from women, helping them experience these incidents from the victim’s point of view. The initiative is part of broader efforts to address stalking, harassment, rape, and domestic abuse.

Male officers have reported gaining valuable insights, particularly regarding how their actions are perceived. The force believes the simulation enhances empathy and decision-making, complementing existing training programs on violence against women and girls.

The VR experience is one of several tools being implemented to improve victim support and public safety.
