Australia's submarine company ASC has expanded its contract with veteran-led Sayres Australia to develop training programmes for the growing AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine sustainment workforce.
The $2 million contract extension covers design and development of specialised training for ASC employees working on Collins Class sustainment and AUKUS submarine programmes. Training will be delivered over three years, focusing on technical proficiency and operational readiness.
Sayres Australia has supported ASC since 2023, developing Navy training courses for the Collins Class Submarine Life of Type Extension programme. Three-quarters of Sayres Australia's workforce are veterans and veterans' family members.
"Partnering with Sayres Australia brings deep Defence expertise into our workforce while supporting veterans in meaningful civilian careers," said Jo Horne, ASC Chief People and Workforce Development Officer.
The contract reflects workforce development challenges as Australia builds capability to sustain conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines at Osborne under the SSN AUKUS programme. ASC was selected as the Australian Government's Sovereign Submarine Partner in March 2024.
Sayres Australia Chief Executive Craig Powell said the company's team "understands the demands of Defence environments and is committed to equipping ASC personnel with the skills to excel in support of this important national endeavour."
