Leonardo and the Italian National Armaments Directorate have signed a multi-year contract to provide logistics support for the Italian Air Force’s fleet of C-27J “Spartan” tactical transport aircraft and for the Full Motion Simulator of the International Training Centre (ITC) at the Air Base in Pisa, headquarters of the 46th Air Brigade.
The contract runs from 2026 to 2028 under a performance-based model to support the Italian Air Force’s fleet of 12 aircraft operating from the Pisa and Pratica di Mare (Rome) bases. During the same period, Leonardo is providing technical and administrative management services for operations at the ITC in Pisa, along with technical and maintenance support services for the ITC flight simulator.
The C-27J “Spartan” is a multi-mission tactical transport aircraft powered by two turboprop engines and designed for a range of operational environments, including operations from unprepared runways and in demanding conditions. The enhanced C-27J Spartan Next Generation variant introduces updated equipment and aerodynamic solutions.
The aircraft’s design includes structural robustness and system redundancy, with more than 275,000 flight hours reported worldwide. The C-27J is operated by multiple air forces and continues to support a variety of taskings, including transport and airlift operations, disaster relief, and firefighting missions.
The C-27J cabin is configurable into 11 arrangements to support different mission profiles. Five standard configurations—Cargo Transport, Troop Transport, Medical Evacuation, Cargo Raid, and Parachute Raid—are produced using modular kits that can be installed in under 30 minutes. Six optional configurations are available with additional modules or equipment: VIP Transportation, Passenger Transportation, Special Medevac, Biocontainment, and Basic and Advanced Firefighting.
