On November 18, 2025, the German Navy commenced pilot training for its new P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft at Lufthansa Aviation Training in Berlin-Schönefeld. The aircraft, manufactured by Boeing, is designed for maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, surface target engagement, and search-and-rescue missions. The first P-8A aircraft has recently been delivered.

The inaugural training session was attended by Captain Broder Nielsen, Commander of the Naval Aviation Command, and representatives from the Berlin Senate. Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner was represented by Mayor and Senator for Finance Stefan Evers.

For the program, Lufthansa Aviation Training is collaborating with U.S.-based ASEC. German P-8A pilots will receive training both in the United States and in Berlin-Schönefeld. The curriculum includes a Boeing 737 Type Rating, which provides a foundation for subsequent P-8A operations. The six-week course combines simulator training, classroom instruction, and practical procedure exercises.

With the agreement, Lufthansa Aviation Training expands its military training activities to include another aircraft type and continues its cooperation with the German Armed Forces.
