The United States and Philippine Air Forces are set to begin Exercise Cope Thunder – Philippines 25-2 on July 7, with primary operations at Basa Air Base running through July 18. Sponsored by Pacific Air Forces, the exercise focuses on bilateral fighter training to strengthen alliance readiness and combined interoperability.
Originally launched in the Philippines in 1976, Cope Thunder moved to Eielson Air Force Base in 1992 before evolving into Red Flag Alaska. Returning to the Philippines in 2023, it provides a vital platform for integrated training between the two nations’ air forces.
This effort reflects commitments under the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, underscoring shared goals of boosting readiness, reinforcing deterrence, and supporting peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
