Indiana Regional Medical Center starts new surgical robotics program

Indiana Regional Medical Center has just announced the start of their new surgical robotics program. The program will begin in the area of general surgery with procedures such as cholecystectomy, inguinal hernia repair, ventral hernia repair and colectomy.

The daVinci XI Surgical System

The daVinci XI surgical system was designed to advance the technology used in minimally invasive surgery and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries.  This robot uses specialized optics and an advanced robotics computer, giving the surgeon complete control while operating. Here’s how it works: The daVinci XI surgical system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient. The surgeon also has a highly magnified view thanks to the systems 3-D high definition vision system allowing for even more accuracy.

Specialized training for the surgeons and hospital staff is already underway and they are preparing to perform their first surgery with the robot.

In an interview with the Indiana Gazette, Dr. Andrew Billon said, “I am very excited to help bring such an advanced technology to our community. We are the only hospital from Greensburg to Harrisburg to offer this technology. I am thrilled to be able to offer general surgery robotic procedures to my patients in the coming months.”

In the future, Indiana Regional Medical Center hopes to expand this new technology to the areas of gynecology and urology.
