The American Medical Association (AMA) and Elsevier, a global information analytics company specializing in science and health, have announced that they will be working together to develop eLearning course content for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). CPT is the most widely accepted nomenclature in the U.S. that reports outpatient and office medical procedures and services.
The CPT code was created over 50 years ago by the AMA to provide the health care system with a uniform language that would transfer important medical information between health care professionals. This code is consistently reviewed and updated to accurately reflect the medical services provided to patients.
CPT simplifies todays health care system by accurately describing complicated medical services with a five-digit numeric code and clinical description of the service. If physicians and provider organizations can understand proper CPT coding they will be able to reduce risk, receive correct payment amounts and appeal insurance denials.
In an interview for AMA, Laurie McGraw, AMA senior vice president of health solutions said, “The CPT code set is constantly evolving to reflect advances in contemporary medical science and technology. Empowering a workforce to accurately code medical procedures streamlines communication across the health system, reducing administrative and rework costs. This collaboration with Elsevier provides education to the right audience at the right time in a format that is easily grasped by learners.”
This collaboration with AMA is just one of many co-developed products for Elsevier. Some of the other associations Elsevier has collaborated with include the Emergency Nurses Association, the Association for Nursing Professional Development and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
About the American Medical AssociationThe American Medical Association has advanced medicine and the betterment of public health for patients for over 170 years. The AMA is responsible for providing essential resources for physicians, residents and medical students to succeed in the medical world. ama-assn.org
