Bates Technical College, located in Tacoma, Washington, set to begin construction this month on a new $42 million Fire Service Training Center. The facility, located on the college’s South Campus near Tacoma and Lakewood, will replace an existing commercial truck-driving lot and is expected to open in 2026.

The new center will offer hands-on training environments for firefighting students, including a live fire simulation structure, drill yards, classrooms, and a replica fire station. These features are designed to allow students to practice real-world emergency response techniques in a safe and controlled setting.

Funded by the Washington State Legislature in 2023, the project aims to strengthen local workforce development and enhance preparedness among future first responders. The training center is also expected to be the college’s first fully electric building, supporting broader sustainability goals.

A groundbreaking event is scheduled for May 28 at the South Campus Auditorium.
