The Joliet Police Department has partnered with Axon to provide officers monthly virtual reality training aimed at improving decision-making and taser use. Officers face scenarios ranging from mental health crises to armed confrontations, practicing de-escalation and split-second choices.
According to department leadership, Joliet was among the early adopters of Axon’s VR headset technology, integrating it to give officers regular, realistic exposure to high-stress situations.
Previously conducted once a year, VR training now takes place monthly at the downtown station. The program has also reduced costs, with officers firing over 16,000 virtual probes instead of live cartridges, saving the city $384,000. Axon's system delivers varied, realistic simulations designed to strengthen de-escalation skills and tactical responses in dynamic situations.
